World ID is built for easy integration, but here are a few core concepts that are helpful to understand before you start.

Credentials

A credential is generally a verifiable digital statement about a subject (see W3C definition). In the case of World ID these statements are about humans, with the most common credentials being Orb verification or document verification. Generally a World ID will have at least one of these credentials.

Presentations

A presentation is when the user proves on their credential to a third-party application (called RP for Relying Party). The RP will then verify the credential and take action accordingly.

Vocabulary

Some terms are used throughout the World ID documentation. Here are a few of the most important ones:
  • World ID: A user’s self-custodial identity, as well as the name of the Protocol.
  • Relying Party or Application: Probably you. A third-party application that wants to verify a user’s credential.
